Poland's Sunday trading ban stays in force as stores test loopholes
Polish law restricts retail activity to eight designated Sundays each year. June 14, 2026 is a non‑trading Sunday, with the next permitted Sunday on June 28. A recent SW Research poll shows 44 % of Poles now support keeping the ban, down from 46 % two years earlier.
In Radom, the E. Leclerc supermarket announced it will be open every Sunday from June 14, 2026, by creating a "Reading Corner" that offers a library service. The store argues the service exempts it from the ban, a tactic that unions say violates the law. Critics note that the Supreme Court has ruled such workarounds inconsistent with the legislation and that fines range from 1,000 zł to 100,000 zł, with possible custodial sentences for repeat offences.
