Poland's Tarcza Wschód program strengthens eastern border security

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz recently reviewed the progress of the ‘Tarcza Wschód’ (East Shield) program in Giżycko, marking two years of the initiative. The program aims to strengthen Poland’s eastern borders with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine by enhancing deterrence through multi-layered infrastructure, reconnaissance, and modern technology, including drone systems and artificial intelligence.

Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the initiative has evolved from a national project into an allied one, integrating with NATO and EU security frameworks. Approximately 10 billion euros have been allocated to the program, which is intended to increase the operational readiness of the border defenses.

However, the program has faced political criticism regarding its implementation and reporting. Former Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak criticized the government for inconsistent data, noting discrepancies in official statements regarding the actual length of the secured border. While government officials provided varying figures ranging from 100 km to over 200 km, Błaszczak claimed the actual secured distance is only about 20 km.
