Polaris Music Prize revamps funding and voting process in Canada
The Polaris Music Prize, Canada’s premier album award, marked its 20th anniversary in 2025 and announced a series of reforms ahead of the 2026 cycle. The main prize money has been reduced from $50,000 to $30,000, while a new $10,000 SOCAN Polaris Song Prize will recognize the best Canadian song. A multi‑city Polaris Festival is also being launched to showcase local talent.
A major change to the selection method is the expansion of the juror pool to 205 music experts from across the provinces and territories, who will now choose the winner instead of a small grand jury. The 2026 short‑list features ten albums, including newcomers Angine de Poitrine, who recently debuted in Toronto as an opening act for Jack White and later headlined a show at the Mod Club, alongside established artists such as Charlotte Cornfield, Peaches, Kaytranada and PUP.
These updates aim to broaden representation, adapt to funding realities, and keep the prize relevant in Canada’s evolving music scene.
