Jakarta labor protests demand Labor Protection Bill reforms

On September 24, 2026, tens of thousands of workers organized by the Koalisi Besar Perjuangan Buruh Indonesia (KBPBI) held large-scale demonstrations across Jakarta. The protesters focused on demands regarding the Labor Protection Bill, specifically seeking improvements in wages, outsourcing regulations, social security, and internship rules.

To manage the demonstrations, Polda Metro Jaya deployed 26,386 joint personnel from the police, TNI, and local government. Security efforts were concentrated around key locations including Monas, Bundaran HI, the DPR/MPR building, and the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor. Police implemented situational traffic diversions to mitigate congestion caused by the movement of approximately 50,000 workers.

Andi Gani Nena Wea, President of the KSPSI, stated that the coalition intends to continue negotiations with the DPR and government. He issued a deadline of September 30, 2026, for meaningful progress on their demands, warning that failure to accommodate these issues could result in a follow-up demonstration involving 100,000 workers.
