Civil unrest and labor protests in Jakarta
Overview
Civil unrest in Jakarta escalated from localized violence to large-scale organized demonstrations in late 2026.
In late August, protests near the DPR/MPR RI Building turned violent as groups engaged in vandalism and arson. These incidents resulted in damage to public facilities, including the main gates of the DPR/MPR building and a police post, as well as the death of one male citizen.
By late September, the scale of demonstrations increased significantly. On September 24, approximately 50,000 workers organized by the Koalisi Besar Perjuangan Buruh Indonesia (KBPBI) held large-scale demonstrations across Jakarta. The protesters demanded reforms to the Labor Protection Bill, specifically targeting wages, outsourcing regulations, social security, and internship rules. To manage the crowds, Polda Metro Jaya deployed 26,386 joint personnel from the police, TNI, and local government, concentrating security around Monas, Bundaran HI, the DPR/MPR building, and the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor.
Andi Gani Nena Wea, President of the KSPSI, stated that the coalition intends to continue negotiations with the DPR and government, issuing a deadline of September 30, 2026, for meaningful progress.
On September 29, approximately 20,000 laborers, including members of the Indonesian Labor Union Association Confederation (ASPEK Indonesia) and the KBPBI, gathered at the DPR/MPR RI Complex to monitor discussions regarding the ratification of the Labor Protection Bill. In response, Polda Metro Jaya deployed 17,628 personnel, with nearly 5,000 officers stationed specifically around the parliamentary complex. DPR Vice Chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad expressed openness to receiving the workers’ aspirations, with representatives scheduled to meet directly with labor leaders to facilitate dialogue.
