Catalonia faces surge in violent crime and express kidnappings

Catalonia is experiencing a series of high-profile criminal incidents, including a wave of 'express kidnappings' and violent crimes. Authorities are investigating multiple cases where individuals were intercepted on the AP-7 highway by men dressed as police officers. In one notable incident, five masked men in 'POLICIA' vests dragged a bloodied man from a vehicle; the victim was later found safe in Girona.

In legal developments, the Barcelona Prosecutor's Office is seeking 25 years and five months of prison for each of nine defendants involved in a 2021 protest for rapper Pablo Hasél. The group is accused of attempted homicide after setting fire to a Guardia Urbana van containing an officer.

Other significant police actions include the investigation of a woman's death in the Utxesa reservoir, now being treated as a homicide following autopsy results, and the arrest of a criminal group in Reus for violent jewelry thefts. Additionally, Mossos d'Esquadra dismantled a marijuana plantation in Barberà del Vallès, arresting three individuals.
