Police commander survives bomb and gun attack in Puerto Lleras, Colombia

On the afternoon of 28 July 2026 an armored police vehicle travelling the Cúcuta‑Puerto Santander corridor was hit by an improvised explosive device and a burst of rifle fire in the rural sector of Puerto Lleras, vereda Alto Viento, Norte de Santander. The blast damaged more than 80 % of the vehicle’s exterior, but the commander – Mayor Jorge Luis Vargas (also reported as Colonel Jorge Andrés Bernal) – and the driver escaped serious injury thanks to the vehicle’s armor. Two other uniformed officers present were unharmed. Authorities have not formally claimed responsibility, but suspect the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) or dissident factions of the former FARC‑33 Front. Police launched a wide‑scale operation to locate the perpetrators and asked the public to provide information through emergency line 123. Parallel reports describe a second ambush on 29 July in the El Banano sector of El Zulia that injured two police officers while targeting the same commander, underscoring a pattern of armed attacks against security forces in the Colombia‑Venezuela border region.
