Security force attacks in Norte de Santander
Entities: National Police of Colombia · Jorge Luis Vargas Manrique · foreign suspect · Catatumbo region · Puerto Lleras, Norte de Santander
Overview
On July 28 2026 the Colombian Army’s Battalion 9 of Task Force Vulcano, together with the National Police, captured a foreign national in La Gabarra, Norte de Santander, who was found with two improvised explosive devices, a pistol and ammunition. The seized material was turned over to judicial authorities, and the task force continued operations in the Catatumbo region to neutralize further threats.
Later that day an armored police vehicle traveling the Cúcuta‑Puerto Santander corridor near Puerto Lleras, vereda Alto Viento, was hit by an improvised explosive device and a burst of rifle fire. More than 80 % of the vehicle’s exterior was destroyed, but the commander – identified as Mayor Jorge Luis Vargas (also reported as Colonel Jorge Andrés Bernal) – and the driver escaped serious injury thanks to the armor; two other officers were unharmed. Police launched a wide‑scale operation, urging the public to call emergency line 123 for information.
A second ambush on 29 July in the El Banano sector of El Zulia targeted the same commander’s convoy, wounding two officers. Authorities have not claimed responsibility but suspect the ELN or dissident factions of the former FARC‑33 Front, highlighting an escalation of armed attacks against security forces in Colombia’s border region.
