Police crack down on illegal high‑powered e‑bikes in Australia and Wales

Mid North Coast Police District in New South Wales launched Operation E‑Voltage on 20 June, engaging about 90 riders of modified e‑bikes and an e‑scooter. Officers seized two e‑bikes and an e‑scooter, issued ten infringements to adults and initiated nine legal processes against juveniles. Sergeant Troy Bulpett warned that some riders were reaching speeds of 60‑70 km/h, saying, "Some of them [riders] are doing 60 to 70km/h – so they are essentially becoming motorbikes," and urged parents to ensure their children understand road rules and wear helmets.

In South Wales, the Police and Crime Commissioner visited Cardiff North to review Operation Livewire, a joint effort with South Wales Police and Cardiff Council targeting illegal e‑vehicles. Since August 2025 the operation has seized around 800 vehicles across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, and a recent multi‑agency raid removed 68 high‑powered Sur‑Ron bikes from streets. The Commissioner highlighted the need for coordinated policing, community‑safety partnerships and enforcement legislation to protect neighborhoods from the dangers of illegal e‑bikes and e‑scooters.
