Police detain four suspects in KM Virgo Transport 8 sinking

Indonesian police have detained four suspects in connection with the sinking of the KM Virgo Transport 8, which occurred in the Masalembo waters of the Java Sea on September 13, 2026. The vessel was traveling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin with 243 passengers when it lost contact.

The suspects include the ship's captain, identified as AY, and three employees from PT Virgo Karya Shipping: LBA (an agent), RH (Operational Manager), and YR (General Manager of the Surabaya branch). The detainees were held on allegations of negligence, complicity, or aiding in the maritime accident, which resulted in fatalities, injuries, and property loss.

Investigators are applying articles from the Shipping Law and the Criminal Code regarding maritime safety and complicity. Authorities stated that the investigation is not limited to those on board the vessel but also extends to corporate entities if evidence suggests involvement in the circumstances leading to the accident.
