Police dismantle fraud ring in Karditsa, Greece
Greek police have arrested three individuals, aged 18, 19, and 20, for operating a criminal group specializing in fraud in the Karditsa region. The group is suspected of stealing more than 146,000 euros and various pieces of jewelry through a series of scams between early September and mid-October 2026.
The perpetrators utilized a method where an unidentified accomplice would call victims while posing as an accountant or a tax official. They would persuade victims to leave cash and valuables in bags or backpacks either outside their homes or in specific rooms to avoid purported tax penalties.
The ring was caught following a sting operation after a man, realizing he was being targeted, contacted the police. Following instructions, the man placed a backpack containing 22,800 euros and jewelry outside his residence. The suspects arrived in a vehicle to collect the bag but were immediately intercepted by authorities.
