Wrocław assault on Ukrainian couple sparks arrests and political outcry
On 26 July 2026 a 20‑year‑old Ukrainian woman, Anastazja, and her 21‑year‑old partner, Maksym, were brutally attacked on Okulickiego Street in Wrocław. Witnesses said the violence began after a dispute in a shop queue and was allegedly provoked by the woman’s Ukrainian accent. Three men beat the couple, kicked them and used a stun device, an incident recorded on video that spread on social media.
Polish police arrested two of the assailants – 27‑year‑old Tomasz M. and 45‑year‑old Adam C., a bare‑knuckle fighter from the GROMDA federation – after a dynamic operation in which one suspect was detained by anti‑terrorist police while trying to leave the city. A third attacker remains at large.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Wrocław Mayor Jacek Sutryk, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha condemned the hate‑motivated violence and called for swift justice, highlighting a rise in anti‑Ukrainian hate crimes in Poland.
