Poland hate‑speech investigations

Entities: Anastazja (20‑year‑old Ukrainian woman) · Maksym (21‑year‑old Ukrainian man) · Adam C. · Maksym · Wrocław

Overview

In early July 2026 Polish authorities opened several investigations under hate‑speech and extremist‑incitement statutes. On July 4 police in Ostrołęka probed an online racist slur, and prosecutors in Warsaw examined a complaint that senior security official Stanisław Żaryn called for hybrid warfare against Russia and the destruction of the Russian Federation.

On July 3 two men forcibly entered the University of Economics in Poznań and demanded to inspect the office of a Ukrainian entrepreneur who assists foreign nationals. They interrogated her about alleged support for Stepan Bandera, recorded her without consent and were later arrested. Prosecutors charged them with defamation and hate speech; they received police supervision and a ban on contacting the victim. The Interior Ministry reiterated a zero‑tolerance stance toward nationalist‑motivated aggression.

One of the detained men was identified as former 12th Greater Poland Territorial Defence Brigade soldier Jarosław K., previously detained in March on suspicion of spying for Russia. The current case draws on material supplied by the Military Counter‑Intelligence Service. A court denied pre‑trial detention, imposing monitoring, passport confiscation and a travel ban, and he may face charges for readiness to act for a foreign intelligence service.

Later in July, a 20‑year‑old Ukrainian woman and her partner were violently assaulted on a Wrocław street, an attack recorded and circulated online. Police arrested two of the assailants—identified as Tomasz M. and Adam C.—while a third remains at large. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Wrocław mayor, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha condemned the hate‑motivated violence, underscoring a perceived rise in anti‑Ukrainian hate crimes and prompting further enforcement actions.
