Zenica prison officer arrested following drug possession chase

The Zenica-Doboj Canton Prosecutor's Office has requested a one-month detention for Ibrahim Handanović, a prison police officer at the Zenica Penal Institution. Handanović, who also serves as an escort for the director of the prison, is suspected of illegal production and sale of narcotics and obstructing an official.

The incident occurred during a routine traffic control in Zenica when police intercepted a Volkswagen Touareg. Upon noticing a bag of suspected drugs in the vehicle, the suspect allegedly ignored orders and fled in high speed. During the subsequent police chase, Handanović reportedly threw a package out of the car window.

Authorities later recovered the item, which was identified through testing as approximately 1,058 grams of cannabis containing THC. The suspect was apprehended near an Orthodox church.

In a separate but related security context, police in Zenica also recently seized over 25 kilograms of suspected narcotics, including amphetamine and marijuana, during a search of a residence in the same region.
