Balkan law enforcement seizures of illegal goods
Overview
Law enforcement agencies in the Balkan region have conducted significant operations targeting the illegal production and trafficking of dangerous materials. In Split, Croatia, police arrested a 36-year-old man following an investigation into drug manufacturing, seizing 205 kilograms of BMK precursor, 960 kilograms of filler powder, and explosive-making equipment. In Slovenia, the Novo mesto police administration uncovered a massive cache in the Gorenjska region, detaining a 67-year-old suspect and seizing 149 firearms—including 95 pistols or revolvers and 54 long guns—along with over 13,300 rounds of ammunition, hand grenades, TNT, detonators, and gunpowder. Matjaž Štern, head of the criminal police sector at the Novo mesto Police Administration, stated that the uncontrolled use or potential distribution of these materials posed a “serious threat to public safety and property.”
Narcotics confiscations have also surged in Croatia’s Dalmatia region, where seven operations resulted in the seizure of over 38 kilograms of drugs, including marijuana, amphetamine, hashish, and cocaine. Spokesperson Tino Milat noted these represent a record for 2026.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, recent operations have targeted narcotics production. In Živinice, a police raid on October 21, 2026, led to the seizure of over one kilogram of amphetamine, 150 grams of marijuana, a pistol, and digital scales. Two suspects, Haris Karić and Tarik Hasić, were ordered into one-month detention; Karić reportedly sustained injuries after jumping from a third-floor window to evade officers. Additionally, the Zenica-Doboj Canton Prosecutor's Office requested detention for Ibrahim Handanović, a prison police officer suspected of illegal narcotics sale and obstructing an official. In Jelah, police seized approximately 1.5 kg of drugs and ammunition during a vehicle stop.
