Police in Dakar seize cocaine while Rwanda arrests 80 in alcohol crackdown
In Dakar, the Regional Narcotics Brigade (BRS) seized 1.070 kilograms of cocaine and hashish during an operation conducted between August 8 and 9, 2026. Following operational intelligence regarding a suspicious package, investigators discovered the drugs hidden in a false bottom of a suitcase at a shop in Sicap Foire.
The operation led to the arrest of three suspects. During a subsequent surveillance operation and pursuit, police intercepted a suspect and recovered a vehicle and cash. A search of a residence resulted in the seizure of additional funds, electronic scales, and packaging materials.
Separately, in Rwanda, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested 80 suspects, including high-ranking officials, for involvement in the production and distribution of illicit alcoholic beverages. The crackdown, which began on July 20, has already resulted in the closure of over 130 establishments by the Rwanda FDA.
The RIB stated that those detained include officials responsible for product standards and certification, business owners, and local leaders. Authorities have intensified these measures due to severe public health concerns; the Minister of Health reported that more than 50 deaths and over 100 cases of blindness have been linked to the consumption of these illicit drinks.
