Police in Scotland seize over 140 e-bikes and e-scooters
Police in Scotland have conducted a week-long crackdown, known as Operation Overlap, resulting in the seizure and destruction of 142 e-bikes and e-scooters. Glasgow recorded the highest number of seizures with 54 vehicles. This operation follows a significant surge in illegal motorized vehicle activity, with over 1,000 seizures reported across the country between January and October.
In North West Edinburgh, officers executed warrants related to motor vehicle thefts and serious assaults, seizing three Sur-Ron bikes, two motorcycles, weapons, and mobile phones. Two individuals were arrested and charged, while a third was arrested on 11 outstanding warrants.
Authorities warned that illegally modified e-bikes pose risks to riders, emergency services, and pedestrians. Under current legislation, e-bikes must not exceed a speed of 15.5 mph or a power output of 250 watts to be used on public roads. Vehicles exceeding these limits are reclassified as motor vehicles, requiring a driving licence, insurance, and a helmet. E-scooters remain prohibited on public roads and pavements. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to £5,000 and penalty points.
