UK police enforcement against illegal motorized vehicles
Overview
Police in the United Kingdom have conducted enforcement actions targeting the illegal use of off-road bikes and e-bikes to combat anti-social behaviour. In early October, officers in Leigh, Wigan, and Warrington seized an off-road bike and a Sur-Ron e-bike, with the vehicles slated for destruction.
By late October, Police Scotland launched Operation Overlap, a week-long crackdown that resulted in the seizure and destruction of 142 e-bikes and e-scooters. Glasgow reported the highest volume of seizures. During this period, officers in North West Edinburgh also executed warrants related to motor vehicle thefts and serious assaults, seizing several Sur-Ron bikes and motorcycles.
Authorities have noted that illegally modified e-bikes, which exceed the legal limits of 15.5 mph or 250 watts, are reclassified as motor vehicles. Such vehicles require a driving licence, insurance, and a helmet, while e-scooters remain prohibited on public roads and pavements.
