Police-involved shootings draw scrutiny in Chicago and Toronto

In Chicago, the Little Village Community Council is demanding criminal charges and the termination of an off-duty police officer following a shooting on October 4. According to the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), the incident began after a verbal exchange between the officer and a group of people. COPA reports the officer fired multiple shots, drove toward the group, and then fired additional shots from two firearms simultaneously. The shooting injured two people and struck a nearby home and vehicle. While the Chicago Police Department alleges a man in the group struck the officer in the face before shots were fired, community activists are calling for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office to pursue attempted murder charges.

In Toronto, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has cleared a police officer of wrongdoing following a fatal encounter in June 2026. During an Emergency Task Force raid in North York, a suspect identified as Nicholas Bennett allegedly shot and killed Constable Marc Pinizzotto. The SIU determined that another officer had “no alternative” but to use lethal force when Bennett fired a pistol at officers. Bennett survived the encounter and has been charged with first-degree murder.
