Henry Nowak death triggers police misconduct probe

Eighteen‑year‑old Henry Nowak was fatally stabbed on 3 December 2025 in Southampton by 23‑year‑old Vickrum Digwa, who later lied to police that he had been the victim of a racist attack. After the attack, two Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary officers arrived, handcuffed Nowak, and ignored his repeated pleas that he had been stabbed and could not breathe. No first‑aid was provided and Nowak died on the scene.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened a gross‑misconduct investigation into the two officers, examining possible breaches of duties, use‑of‑force standards and discreditable conduct, and whether race or religion influenced their decisions. IOPC director Derrick Campbell said, “There is clear evidence that public confidence in the force may have been seriously harmed by this incident.” Body‑camera footage captured an officer responding, “I don’t think you have, mate,” to Nowak’s claim of being stabbed.

Nowak’s family lodged formal complaints, and the case sparked protests and arrests in Southampton. The IOPC will decide whether disciplinary action follows the investigation.
