Henry Nowak murder case: confession and mother sentenced
Overview
The killing of 18‑year‑old finance student Henry Nowak in Southampton on 3 December 2025 remains a focal point for legal and policing scrutiny. 23‑year‑old Vickrum Digwa was convicted of murder on 1 June 2026 and sentenced to life with a 21‑year minimum. In July 2026 a police‑van transcript revealed Digwa’s confession to his brother, admitting he used a large ceremonial dagger rather than the kirpan he had claimed, and repudiating his earlier self‑defence narrative.
Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur, was found guilty of assisting an offender after she removed the weapon from the crime scene and concealed it at the family home. She was sentenced to three years’ custody on 17 July 2026, a verdict that drew criticism from Nowak’s family and highlighted concerns about parental facilitation of violent crimes.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct continues its gross‑misconduct inquiry into two Hampshire officers who handcuffed a dying Nowak in hospital, a probe that has intensified debate over police use‑of‑force and alleged bias. Digwa has lodged an appeal against his conviction (permission sought 3 July 2026) and the Attorney General has appealed under the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme.
In August 2026 Digwa was transferred to HMP Frankland, a high‑security facility housing notorious inmates. Prison officials warned he would be a target; reports describe him arriving “terrified, literally shaking”. The case‑management hearing is set for 4 June 2027, with a trial on the weapon’s classification scheduled for 27 September 2027. The intersecting criminal, disciplinary and policy dimensions of the Nowak case continue to shape discussions on policing reforms and the handling of high‑profile prisoners in the UK.
