Thai police officer kills wife at Chonburi kindergarten
A Thai police officer fatally shot his wife, a teacher, at the Nong Pla Lai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province on Wednesday morning. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Pailin Thongthach, was shot inside the school's canteen. All 44 students and three other staff members were successfully evacuated and remained unharmed during the incident.
Following the shooting, the suspect, identified as Police Sub-Lieutenant Thassaphong Thongthach, fled to his residence approximately three kilometers from the school. This led to a tense 20-hour standoff as police surrounded his home. The situation eventually concluded on Thursday morning when Thassaphong surrendered to authorities after being persuaded by his son, who is also a police officer.
Chonburi Governor Narit Niramaiwong has ordered the school to close temporarily and has arranged for mental health specialists to provide support to the students and faculty. The incident has renewed scrutiny regarding gun violence and school security in Thailand.
