Chonburi kindergarten shooting

Overview

On September 9, 2026, a shooting occurred at the Nong Pla Lai Municipal Kindergarten in Chonburi province, Thailand. The victim, 48-year-old teacher Pailin Thongthach, was fatally shot in the school canteen. Witnesses reported that the suspect, identified as the victim’s husband and an active police lieutenant named Thassaphong Thongthach, arrived in a white vehicle and engaged the victim in conversation before firing shots.

During the incident, 44 students and three staff members were successfully evacuated and remained unharmed, though some children were reportedly frightened by the gunfire. Following the shooting, the suspect fled to his residence approximately three kilometers from the school, leading to a 20-hour standoff with police. The situation concluded on Thursday morning when Thassaphong surrendered to authorities after being persuaded by his son, who is also a police officer.

Chonburi Governor Narit Niramaiwong ordered the temporary closure of the school and arranged for mental health specialists to support students and faculty. The event has prompted renewed discussions regarding school security and gun violence in Thailand.
