Ankara police operation detains 27, mayor Hüseyin Can Güner among 36 suspects
In the early hours of 11 July 2026, police units from the Ankara Provincial Police and the Financial Crimes Investigation Branch raided the Çankaya Municipality building, the mayor’s residence and several other addresses. The operation, coordinated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, resulted in arrest warrants for 36 individuals, including Çankaya Mayor Hüseyin Can Güner. Of those, 27 were taken into custody while searches and seizure of documents continued.
The suspects are accused of forming an organized crime group, receiving and giving bribes, and manipulating public procurement contracts. The public prosecutor cited “criminal organization formation”, “membership in a criminal organization”, “bribery” and “tampering with tenders” as the basis for the detention orders.
Mayor Güner, who was abroad at the time, said he had provided a spare key to facilitate the search and that he would return to Ankara within hours. He affirmed that his administration has acted transparently and pledged to inform the public once the investigation’s details are clarified.
CHP leader Özgür Özel, speaking in Adana, condemned the raid as a “political operation”, accusing the judiciary of being used to suppress opposition. CHP supporters gathered in front of the municipal building, demanding the operation be halted.
The raid also forced the cancellation of a planned commemoration ceremony for former mayor Doğan Taşdelen, highlighting the immediate impact on municipal activities.
