Police Union in Saxony-Anhalt sees resignations after AfD controversy
The Police Union (GdP) in Saxony-Anhalt has reported a low double-digit number of resignations following internal controversy regarding the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
The dispute stems from an article written by GdP Vice Federal Chairman Sven Hüber in a union magazine. In the text, Hüber warned of a potential ‘seizure of power’ by the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt and reminded officers of their constitutional oath to protect the constitution. He also noted the duty of remonstrance, which requires officials to report instructions they deem unlawful.
Nancy Emmel, the GdP's deputy state chair, stated that some officers viewed the text as an anti-AfD election recommendation. She emphasized that the union remains politically neutral and does not dictate voting behavior to its members. Similar criticisms regarding political neutrality within police ranks have been raised by GdP officials in other regions, such as Bavaria.
