Saxony-Anhalt political neutrality controversies

Overview

Political tensions have emerged in Saxony-Anhalt concerning the neutrality of public services and the political stance of the Police Union (GdP).

Initial friction arose from a controversy involving volunteer firefighters in Egeln, where the AfD parliamentary group defended personnel following a photograph with state legislator Ulrich Siegmund. This coincided with scrutiny of the GdP and its alleged links to the ‘Democratic Policing Initiative’, which critics claim seeks to undermine non-left-wing governments.

The controversy intensified within the GdP following an article by Vice Federal Chairman Sven Hüber. Hüber warned of a potential ‘seizure of power’ by the AfD and reminded officers of their constitutional oath and the duty of remonstrance. This led to a low double-digit number of resignations within the union, as some members viewed the text as an anti-AfD election recommendation. Deputy state chair Nancy Emmel has since stated that the union remains politically neutral.
