Police union requests urgent meeting with Luís Montenegro

The Association of Police Professionals (ASPP), the primary union for Portugal's Public Security Police (PSP), has requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The union cites rising crime rates and significant operational constraints within the PSP as primary reasons for the request.

Key concerns raised by the ASPP include a shortage of personnel on the ground, growing demotivation among officers, and a reduced capacity to respond to the needs of the population. The union argues that the increase in criminal activity is a direct reflection of a policing model that is no longer adapted to the country's actual needs.

Furthermore, the ASPP expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Internal Administration, citing an inability to reach productive negotiations and a failure to implement an agreement reached in 2024. The union described the government's recent response to their request as mere 'bureaucratic forwarding' and is demanding real dialogue, career valuation, and immediate recruitment of new professionals.
