The Association of Police Professionals (ASPP), representing Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP), has requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, citing rising crime, personnel shortages, and officer demotivation. The union has criticized the Ministry of Internal Administration for what it describes as mere ‘bureaucratic forwarding’ of their concerns. Law enforcement agencies continue to conduct widespread operations targeting organized crime and narcotics. Recent actions include the investigation of a series of lightning robberies at jewelry stores in the Margem Sul region and Lisbon, where a gang seized approximately 100,000 euros in gold. In Gondomar, a 53-year-old goldsmith was placed in preventive detention as the alleged mastermind behind a robbery of three gold bars valued at 342,000 euros. In Caldas da Rainha, a nine-month investigation into violent crime led to the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of a firearm, narcotics, and over 26,000 euros. In Sintra, the Polícia Judiciária dismantled a drug trafficking network, resulting in six arrests and the seizure of approximately 2,500 doses of cocaine, hashish, and MDMA, alongside firearms and vehicles. Investigations in Sintra further revealed a multi-year distribution network, with one suspect placed in preventive detention. In Portimão, authorities disrupted a Danish cartel after monitoring a group that allegedly used a funeral car to collect drugs at a marina. Other enforcement actions include the recovery of 10 weapons and 70 rounds of ammunition in Alcobaça and Pombal, the arrest of a man for stealing electrical cables in Almada, and the detention of individuals in Coimbra and Figueira da Foz for various offenses, including irregular residency.
