Polish Agriculture Ministry seeks EU aid for frost‑hit farms and launches food‑waste reduction program
The Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MRiRW) announced that recent frosts have caused severe losses to orchard and plantation farms, with some producers losing up to 100 % of their crops. Minister Stefan Krajewski said the ministry will submit an extraordinary support request to the European Commission and has earmarked funds in its budget to compensate affected farmers. Provincial governors are expected to form commissions to assess damage, enabling the ministry to apply for EU emergency assistance.
In parallel, MRiRW launched the POMOST project, a joint effort with the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa, and the Federation of Polish Food Banks. The initiative aims to develop tools, recommendations and procedures to cut food waste across the entire supply chain by 2029. Results will be shared through an online portal serving as a knowledge centre for reducing food loss.
Both measures reflect the ministry’s focus on supporting farmers after climate‑related losses and improving the sustainability of Poland’s food system.
