Polish agriculture undergoes shifts in crop production and biogas potential

Recent data from the National Support Centre for Agriculture (KOWR) highlights evolving trends in the Polish agricultural sector, specifically regarding specialized crops and the emerging biogas market.

In the biogas sector, the Ministry of Agriculture has indicated that the development of biogas and biomethane could create new revenue streams for farms through the sale of substrates such as slurry, manure, silage, and food processing residues. In 2025, agricultural biogas plants consumed approximately 7.7 million tons of raw materials. The profitability of this model depends on substrate composition, the regularity of supply, and transportation costs, as the high water content in materials like slurry can make long-distance transport economically unviable.

Simultaneously, there are notable shifts in crop cultivation. The wine industry is expanding, with nearly 1,200 hectares of vineyards and an increasing number of producers. Other growing sectors include fiber hemp, with over 1,600 producers covering approximately 2,285 hectares, and tobacco, which has over 9,000 hectares of planned cultivation. While these specialized sectors grow, the number of milk collection entities has seen a decline.
