Poland reports multiple drownings and water safety alerts during heat wave

During a period of record high temperatures, Polish emergency services recorded at least eight drowning deaths. Victims included a 47‑year‑old man in Zalew Arkadia near Suwałki, a 49‑year‑old man at Jeziorem Bielińskim, two men in Podkarpacie, a 24‑year‑old in Jutrosin, a woman found dead in a private pool in Nądnia, and a 44‑year‑old man who fell from a SUP board on Lake Zacisze.

Police and fire units responded to each incident, often involving specialized water‑rescue teams and prosecutors overseeing investigations. Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to use only supervised swimming areas, avoid swimming after alcohol or intense sun exposure, and to stay hydrated.

Concurrently, a series of water‑related initiatives were launched. A conference in Ostrołęć highlighted “black points” where drowning risk is high, and the national “Kręci mnie bezpieczeństwo… nad wodą” campaign reiterated safety rules. The Water Authority warned of unprecedented water consumption, prompting temporary pressure drops in several municipalities, while Wody Polskie increased inspections and fines for illegal groundwater extraction.

The combined pressure of the heat wave, heightened water demand, and soaring numbers of water‑related accidents have led officials to consider extending lifeguard hours and reinforcing public education on safe water practices.
