Polish Children's Hospital Warns of Rising Electric Scooter Injuries

Medical experts at the University Children’s Clinical Hospital in Białystok held a press briefing highlighting a steady increase in severe injuries among children using electric scooters. Professor Adam Hermanowicz noted a sharp rise in head, facial and neurological trauma, emphasizing that even low‑speed falls can cause serious harm. Professor Ewa Matuszczak described common limb, abdominal and internal organ injuries that often require complex surgery and lengthy rehabilitation, affecting whole families.

The speakers stressed that electric scooters are a legitimate mode of transport, not toys, and must be used according to traffic rules, with speed adapted to conditions and protective gear—especially helmets—mandatory. They called for broader education campaigns involving parents and caregivers to instill safe riding habits and reduce hospitalisations.

The briefing underscored the need for nationwide preventive measures and public awareness to curb the growing burden on the pediatric healthcare system.
