Polish dairy sector faces demographic and economic shifts

The Polish dairy sector is facing a period of significant structural and economic transition. At the 23rd International Dairy Community Forum, industry leaders emphasized the need for long-term strategies to maintain competitiveness. Agnieszka Maliszewska, president of the Polish Dairy Chamber, warned that the entire system could collapse if the profitability of individual farmers is not protected.

Demographic shifts are also reshaping the industry. Martin Ziaja of PFHBiPM noted that while the number of young farmers is decreasing, sector consolidation is an inevitable response to an aging workforce. This trend is mirrored by technological shifts, such as the increasing use of automation in family-run farms to combat labor shortages.

Economic pressures are mounting as the FAO food price index rises, potentially driving up food costs in Poland. Simultaneously, producers are expressing outrage over retail pricing; specifically, a promotion at Biedronka offering milk for 49 groszy per liter has been criticized by breeders as a threat to the viability of dairy farming. Amidst these challenges, the 19th Dairy Cooperatives Ranking recognized several leaders in innovation, sustainability, and management, including Piątnica, Mlekpol, and Ryki.
