Polish dairy sector faces demographic and economic shifts

The Polish dairy cooperative industry, previously highlighted by the 19th Dairy Cooperative Ranking, is now navigating significant structural and economic transitions. While the ranking recognized leaders such as LAZUR, Spółdzielnia Mleczarska w Gostyniu, Okręgowa Spółdzielnia Mleczarska w Piątnicy, Mlekpol, Spółdzielnia Mleczarska w Rykach, the Instytut Innowacji Przemysłu Mleczarskiego, Spółdzielcza Mleczarnia Spomlek, and Mlekovita, the sector faces broader systemic challenges.

At the 23rd International Dairy Community Forum, industry leaders addressed the need for long-term competitiveness strategies. Agnieszka Maliszewska, president of the Polish Dairy Chamber, warned that the system could collapse if the profitability of individual farmers is not protected.

Demographic shifts are also impacting the industry. Martin Ziaja of PFHBiPM noted that a decreasing number of young farmers and an aging workforce are making sector consolidation inevitable. To combat labor shortages, family-run farms are increasingly turning to automation.

Economic pressures are mounting due to a rising FAO food price index, which may increase food costs in Poland. Additionally, producers have expressed outrage regarding retail pricing, specifically criticizing a Biedronka promotion offering milk for 49 groszy per liter, which breeders view as a threat to the viability of dairy farming.
