Polish debt climbs: middle‑aged households owe 28 bn zł, farmers over 5.6 mn zł each
Data from the Krajowy Rejestr Długów show that Polish adults aged 36‑59 carry a total of 28 billion zloty in debt. The younger segment (36‑45) owes about 11 bn zł, roughly 22 000 zł per debtor, while the older segment (46‑59) holds 17 bn zł, averaging 30 500 zł each. Over half a million people in the younger group account for one‑quarter of all Polish debt, despite having the country’s highest median salaries.
In agriculture, the register lists 3 415 indebted farmers at year‑end 2025, with total obligations falling to 230.5 million zloty. The average farm debt exceeds 67 000 zł, and a record‑holding farmer in the Mazowieckie region owes more than 5.6 million zł. Analysts link high indebtedness to rising costs of housing, education, energy, fertilizers and the volatility of farm product prices, stressing the need for more stable financing and risk‑mitigation measures.
