Polish defence firms to deliver SAN anti‑drone system under EU SAFE programme
Poland’s defence industry will develop a multi‑layered SAN anti‑drone system within 18 months, with the first units slated for delivery to the Polish Army by 2026. The contracts, signed in January between the Armament Agency and a consortium of the Polish Defence Group and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, task PIT‑RADWAR with supplying tactical communications, radars, sensors and effectors that will form 18 battery units, 52 fire platoons and 703 vehicles. Funding comes primarily from the EU’s SAFE (Strategic Autonomy for Europe) programme, which also aims to boost production capacity, with PIT‑RADWAR expecting a ten‑fold increase in output.
The SAFE programme is opening European markets for Polish defence products. Romania, for example, plans to purchase Polish Warmate loitering munitions and Gladius system components in a deal worth about €146‑147 million, part of joint EU procurement orders. The initiative is expected to foster further sales to Central and Eastern European states such as the Baltic nations, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and to encourage local industrial bases like WB Romania. The overall effect is to enhance Poland’s export potential and strengthen regional defence capabilities.
