Polish deposit‑return scheme sees strong consumer uptake but machine overload looming

A survey commissioned by the national deposit‑return operator Krajowy System Kaucyjny Zwrotka shows that 85 % of Polish shoppers combine returning containers with their purchases, and 61 % consider automatic machines the most convenient method. Overall, 90 % say they would return bottles or cans at a grocery or supermarket, with 81 % actively using or planning to use the system.

Retailers report that the growing volume of returns is straining the machines. Frequent outages and full containers force consumers to visit multiple points, raising irritation. Operators acknowledge the challenge ahead of the summer peak in beverage consumption and say they will provide additional logistical support to avoid a breakdown of the service.

The findings suggest that the deposit‑return system is becoming an integral part of shoppers’ routines, with no evident generational barriers, while highlighting the need for improved machine reliability and store logistics.
