Poland says Russia lacks capacity for a large‑scale attack

Poland’s foreign minister Radosław Sikorski told Italy’s Il Messaggero that Russia does not currently have the military capability to launch a major offensive against Poland. He warned that Moscow could still try limited hybrid provocations – such as false‑flag operations, drone incursions or attempts to shift blame onto Ukraine – to test NATO’s resolve.

Sikorski stressed that Warsaw takes Russian threats seriously, citing centuries‑long security concerns, but he said there is no reason for panic. He noted Poland’s ongoing effort to strengthen its defence, including the request for a permanent U.S. base and the deployment of an American missile‑defence system in Redzikowo. The minister also referenced a report that the United States warned Poland of a possible limited Russian provocation, which he described as “likely true.”

He added that Russia’s focus remains on the war in Ukraine, where it has failed to achieve its objectives after more than a decade of fighting, and that Europe’s sanctions package has further constrained Moscow. Sikorski concluded that while Russia may attempt provocations, a full‑scale attack on Poland is unlikely at present.
