Poland healthcare system faces debt and staffing crises
The Polish healthcare system is grappling with significant financial instability and staffing shortages across various regions. District hospitals face a combined debt of approximately 30 billion PLN, with the National Health Fund (NFZ) reportedly owing hospitals over 10 billion PLN for excess services performed. Experts warn that these financial pressures, combined with new legislation regarding physician working hours, could lead to hospitals ceasing treatment or closing departments.
Staffing shortages are causing direct service disruptions. In Ciechanów, the pediatric surgery department has been suspended since May due to a lack of specialists, leaving only two surgeons to cover the region. Similarly, in Chorzów, the municipal hospital is struggling with a surge in emergency patients following service reductions at nearby facilities, leading to ambulance queues and rejected funding requests.
Structural reforms are also being debated. The NFZ has suggested a model where only 200–210 multi-profile hospitals maintain 24-hour readiness, while others focus on planned treatments. In the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region, authorities are moving to consolidate three indebted hospitals into a single limited liability company to improve management and debt restructuring.
