Polish drivers face up to 9,610 zł fine for missing mandatory OC insurance

In Poland, the mandatory third‑party liability (OC) insurance can trigger large fines when it lapses. The Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny (UFG) automatically detects gaps without police checks and issues penalties ranging from 1,920 zł for a three‑day lapse in a passenger car to 9,610 zł for gaps longer than 14 days. For heavier vehicles such as trucks, tractors and buses, the fines are higher, reaching 14,420 zł for extended periods, while motorcycles face lower amounts.

Drivers must keep the insurance active even if the vehicle is unused. Failure to do so not only leads to the UFG surcharge but also leaves the driver liable for any accident costs out of pocket. The UFG can accept proof of coverage, sale documents, or theft reports to contest a fine, and may allow installment payments or reductions based on financial hardship.
