Polish Episcopal Conference opposes surrogacy

The Bioethics Expert Team of the Polish Episcopal Conference (KEP) has issued a formal position opposing surrogacy, describing it as inherently immoral and incompatible with Christian faith and morality.

The experts argue that a child is not the property of parents and that conception and birth should not be subjects of commercial transactions. They expressed concern regarding the increasing availability of surrogacy offers in Poland, noting that these procedures often rely on in vitro fertilization, which carries various genetic and psychological implications.

The statement further characterizes surrogacy conducted abroad as having the characteristics of international human trafficking, asserting that children are being treated as commodities rather than persons with inherent dignity. Additionally, the experts criticized the treatment of women who offer their bodies for surrogacy, often driven by financial motives. The KEP experts have called on Polish state authorities to take immediate and decisive action to prevent surrogacy for Polish citizens and to block the activities of companies offering such procedures within the country.
