Former KRRiT chief Maciej Świrski arrested over PFN “Sprawiedliwe Sądy” campaign
Agents of Poland’s Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) detained former KRRiT chairman Maciej Świrski and former Polish National Foundation (PFN) board member Cezary Jurkiewicz on 14 July 2026 following a request from the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Rzeszów. The investigation concerns alleged abuse of authority and neglect of duties in 2017 when PFN financed a media campaign titled “Sprawiedliwe sądy”, aimed at attacking the judiciary and supporting the ruling Law & Justice (PiS) government. Prosecutors say the campaign caused at least PLN 8.4 million in financial loss to the foundation and violated its statutory purpose.
Both men were taken to Rzeszów, placed under travel bans and had their passports confiscated; they were later released to house arrest. CBA also searched the residences of Piotr Matczuk and Anna Plakwicz, advisors linked to the campaign, seizing computers and phones. Minister of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak described the campaign as a political order that “de‑legitimised independent courts” and noted that moral damages are “incalculable”. The alleged offences carry a penalty of up to ten years’ imprisonment.
