Polish farmers face stricter rules on tractor licensing and irrigation water use

In Poland, a category B driver's licence permits operating agricultural tractors and low‑speed vehicles, but the regulations contain several caveats. Drivers may operate tractors without additional qualifications only if attached equipment does not exceed 750 kg total permissible mass; heavier gear requires a category T or B+E endorsement. The licence also does not allow cross‑border travel with tractors, and machines with their own wheels are treated as trailers, subject to the same weight limits.

For irrigation, any extraction of water above 5 m³ per day – whether from wells or surface sources – requires a water‑right permit and an accompanying operat. Use of water without the proper permission is punishable by administrative fines starting at 5,000 zł, enforced by regional water‑management authorities.
