Polish food guides advise against refrigerating tomatoes and many other produce items

Guidelines published in Poland explain that storing ripe tomatoes in a refrigerator reduces their aroma, sweetness and texture; optimal storage is at room temperature (18‑22 °C) with the stem end down, in a breathable basket away from direct sunlight. The same advice extends to other items that deteriorate when chilled: cucumbers become soft and watery; bananas develop brown spots and lose flavor; chocolate can develop a whitish bloom; lemons and eggplants lose firmness; sweet potatoes become hard and lose taste. These foods are best kept in a cool, dry pantry or shaded countertop, separate from ethylene‑producing fruits such as apples. When refrigeration is unavoidable, the items should be returned to room temperature before use. The recommendations aim to preserve flavor, extend freshness and reduce food waste.
