Polish football clubs face foreign-player limits; Warsaw stadium eyes Olympic expansion

The Polish Football Association (PZPN) will vote on May 14 to require Ekstraklasa matchday squads to contain at least eight to ten Polish‑passport players out of a 20‑player roster. The rule would compel clubs that rely heavily on foreign talent—such as Pogoń Szczecin (81.3% foreign players), Lechia Gdańsk (75.5%), Radomiak Radom, Cracovia and Górnik Zabrze—to overhaul their line‑ups for the next season.

At the same time, Poland’s Ministry of Sport and Tourism is reviewing a major reconstruction of the PGE Narodowy stadium in Warsaw. The plan would expand capacity from roughly 58,000 to 80,000 seats, add an athletics track and modify the roof to meet possible Olympic standards. Implementing the changes could take up to four years, during which the venue’s full schedule would be curtailed, and the project’s cost has yet to be disclosed.
