Polish grain fields experience premature green regrowth ahead of harvest
In parts of Poland, cereal crops such as oats, barley and wheat have produced secondary green shoots just before the harvest season. The phenomenon, known locally as “odmładzanie,” follows a period of severe drought and heat waves that limited plant growth, after which unusually heavy rains supplied abundant water and nutrients, prompting the plants to generate new shoots.
The green regrowth offers little yield value and creates several problems for harvest. Immature grain from the shoots increases the proportion of foreign material, raises the moisture content of the harvested batch and can contaminate the grain. These conditions also elevate the risk of self‑heating and mold development during storage. Mechanical damage from machinery or traffic on field paths can further stimulate the regrowth, but the main driver is the abrupt change from moisture deficit to excess water.
The development is most frequently observed on oat fields, though it can appear in wheat and barley as well. While the shoots are usually low and develop later than the main crop, they interfere with combine operation and can reduce overall grain quality and profitability for Polish farmers.
