Polish hospitals face rising debt and expenditure control issues

Polish state-funded hospitals are facing significant financial challenges, characterized by mounting debt and issues with expenditure control. Former National Health Fund President Adam Niedzielski estimated the total hospital debt at over 42 billion PLN, noting it could rise to 44 billion PLN by the end of the year.

Experts highlight systemic issues, including a lack of real-time financial analysis and inadequate verification of staff working hours. Piotr Magdziarz, a restructuring expert, warned that many facilities have entered a cycle where new loans are taken solely to maintain liquidity and pay off existing obligations rather than to fund development.

In addition to debt management, hospital administrators are emphasizing the need for rigorous cost-benefit analyses regarding medical equipment and infrastructure. Piotr Kagankiewicz, director of the University Clinical Hospital in Radomsko, noted that investments must prioritize return on investment and clinical necessity to avoid acquiring underutilized technology.
