Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski ordered the city civil‑registry office to begin transcribing marriages of same‑sex couples performed in EU member states, saying the step follows rulings of the EU Court of Justice and Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court. The decision, described as a technical procedure, sparked criticism from politicians such as Law and Justice‑aligned MP Marek Sawicki, who warned it could pave the way for adoption by same‑sex couples and conflict with the traditional concept of family. Sawicki said, “no decision of any president will change the constitution and laws.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk later apologised to LGBTQ Poles, stating, “I would like to apologise to all those who felt rejected and humiliated for many years.” PSL MP Urszula Pasławska called the issue “important but niche,” noting that the government is also finalising a separate “nearest‑person” law that would grant tax, inheritance and medical‑information rights to over two million people. She stressed that the legislation does not touch marriage or adoption and is intended to be acceptable across the political spectrum.
