Polish Low‑Priced Food Exports Spur EU Market and Regulatory Concerns

Czech shoppers living near the border regularly travel to Poland to buy items such as butter, meat and bakery products at prices up to 40 % lower than in the Czech Republic. A test by Czech journalists showed that a pack of butter can cost as much as 85 zł less in Poland. In response, the Czech agriculture minister announced an analysis of EU rules that could forbid the sale of food products below their purchase price, warning that such a ban might raise prices for Czech consumers.

In Poland, a regional agricultural council highlighted a sharp divergence in sugar prices: retail sugar fell 17.3 % in Poland while it rose 2.6 % in Germany. The council suspects dumping and has asked the national agricultural chamber to request an official investigation, noting that the price drop hurts beet growers and threatens contract profitability.
