Polish Marian Shrines Host Pilgrimage Weeks Amid Local Tensions
From 9 to 16 August, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Przeczyca will hold a Marian Week linked to a pilgrimage indulgence. Daily liturgies will focus on the theme “Mary, teach us to proclaim Christ,” with masses, prayers for various groups and a special ceremony on 15 August when Archbishop Henryk Nowacki will bless harvest wreaths, herbs, flowers and traditional breads. The week concludes with prayers for families and a service for uniformed services led by Bishop Andrzej Jeż.
In the nearby town of Gietrzwałd, preparations are under way for the 150th anniversary of the 1877 Marian apparitions that drew pilgrims to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd. Local officials, including mayor Jan Kasprowicz, have dismissed reports of conflict between residents and pilgrims, stating that the municipality welcomes visitors and that no disputes over parking or land use have arisen. Religious leaders echo this view, emphasizing the continued importance of the shrine for the faithful.
